Our secondary ensemble's original production Between the Lines captivated audiences and judges alike—earning recognition for ensemble work, student direction, and original writing.
When the lights came up on Between the Lines at the Victorian State Theatre Festival last month, our Year 10 and 11 drama students had no idea what was about to unfold.
By the evening's end, they'd earned three of the festival's most competitive awards: Best Ensemble Performance, Outstanding Student Direction, and the adjudicator's special commendation for Original Writing.
For drama teacher Rachel Nguyen, the recognition was well-deserved but not the point.
"What matters most is what these students discovered about themselves through the process. The awards are wonderful—but they're a reflection of months of vulnerability, trust, and genuine collaboration."
A story written by students, for students
Between the Lines explores identity, belonging, and the unspoken pressures young people navigate daily. Unlike traditional school productions, this work wasn't adapted from an existing script. Every word was written by the students themselves.
